Attention to Integrity

There has been much in the News recently about Artificial Intelligence. You may be surprised to learn that Ai* is referred to several times in the Bible (Gen. 12:8; 13:3; Josh. 7:1-5; 8:1-29; 10:1-2; Ezra 2:28; Isa. 10:28; Jer. 49:3).

God instructed Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree of knowledge of good and evil lest they die (Gen. 2:9,16-17). Today, Artificial Intelligent (AI) industry leaders are warning of a potential doomsday scenario with advanced AI systems becoming out of control or providing erroneous information leading to dire consequences. In the beginning it was about “bites” from an Apple, now it is about “bytes” in AI. Like an Apple, AI is delightful to the eye, so don’t consume it and die.

God viewed his Creation and found everything in it good (Gen. 1:31). Therefore, the tree of knowledge must have been pleasing to God, too. When knowledge is used for noble purposes, it is good. But worldly knowledge often comes with prestige, power and wealth, which may predispose some to compromise their values and ethics for personal gain. Like knowledge, there is nothing intrinsically bad about AI, but unintended catastrophes could be lurking on the path of AI.

In contrast to human knowledge which is often flawed and self-serving, God’s divine wisdom is pure (Jam. 3:17), teaching us to live by the gold standard of character (Col. 1:9-10; 2 Pet. 1:3-11). The Holy Spirit is the source of all truth (John 14:17,26; 16:13), wisdom, understanding and knowledge (Prov. 2:6; Isa. 11:2; Jam. 1:5). In Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:2-3), and it is through the Holy Spirit that we come to know God better (Eph. 1:17).

When we grow in our knowledge of God (2 Pet. 3:18), we glow with the light of Christ (2 Cor. 4:6). While the contemporary world’s focus is on the AI of Artificial Intelligence, the Christian’s focus should be on the AI of Attention to Integrity as we walk with Jesus in holiness and love.

*Ai (a.k.a. Aiath) is an ancient Canaanite city. After the Israelites burned it, they called it Ai, which in Hebrew means “a heap of ruins” (Josh. 8:28). Its destruction, like that of Sodom and Gomorrah, represents God’s judgment on grievous sinners.
