Our infinite God was born into a finite world as an infant for the purpose of showing us his love and mercy in a very personal and tangible way. But, why did God create an amazing “five star” limitless universe?
Scientists currently calculate the universe to be 26.7 billion years old, earth around 4.54 billion, and humans to have existed on earth for 6 million years. This makes Christ’s lifetime of only two millenniums ago seem like yesterday in cosmic time, which brings to mind Psalm 90:4, which says of God, “For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by” (also, see 2 Pet. 3:8).
The heavens in their voiceless language of praise, testify to the expansive grandeur of our eternal God’s creation (Ps. 8:1; 19:1-4; 90:2). To acknowledge God’s infiniteness is to affirm his divinity, and that he is the source of everything that has been created (Ps. 33:6; Isa. 40:25-26).
Scripture expresses the eternalness of the “Ancient of Days” (Dan. 7:9,13,22) by stating that God is the First and Last, the Beginning and End (Isa. 44:6; Rev. 21:6; 22:13). Nothing can exist without him creating it (Ps. 102:24-27; John 1:1-3; Col. 1:15-17).
When we witness the greatness of our Sovereign Lord (1 Chron. 16:25-27; 29:10-11), we are humbled by our littleness, our insignificance (Job 7:17; Ps. 8:3-4; 144:3-4; Isa. 40:21-24) on a planet that is a mere speck in his unfathomably vast universe. Yet, how loved and special we are to be called by our heavenly Father, his beloved children (John 1:12-13; 1 Jn. 3:1).
Christ’s love, mercy and blessings are as expansive and extravagant as his universe (Ps. 57:10; 103:11). In Proverbs, we learn that “blessings crown the head of the righteous” (10:6) and the faithful will be “richly blessed” (28:20).
How precious we must be to God for him to create a universe with such beauty for us to behold. May everything on earth and in the starry heavens – sun and moon, clouds and snow, hills and mountains, wild animals and cattle, and every created thing, including YOU, give praise to the name of the Lord (Ps. 145:21; 148; 150:6; Rev. 5:13).
