Walking with Jesus

Walking with Jesus is first and foremost about being in relationship with God. The LORD’s calling to Abraham, the father of faith, is the same for every believer from generation-to-generation, “Walk before me and be blameless” (Gen. 17:1).

When you walk with Jesus, you walk with dignity and purpose, inspired with the hope and joy of your salvation. Deuteronomy 10:12-13 and Micah 6:8 summarize what it means to walk humbly before God: To love and serve the LORD with all your heart and soul, to revere him, to live in obedience to all his ways, and to act justly and love mercy.

Perhaps, the best portrayal in the Bible of walking with Jesus can be found in the narrative about two disciples, who fled Jerusalem in fear, traveling along the road to Emmaus after Jesus’ crucifixion (Luke 24:13-35).

The risen Christ unknown to them until later, walked with them, explaining all the prophecies in Scripture concerning the Messiah. After their spiritual eyes were opened, they recognized Christ and then, he disappeared from their view. The two men in their amazement exclaimed to one another, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32). Overjoyed, they returned to the city to tell the disciples about Christ’s appearance to them.

The lesson in this story is that, if we walk with Jesus, he will reveal himself to us in his Word and open our hearts to the joy that comes from really knowing him.

Let us take as our example, Jesus, the Son of God, who being one with his Father, shared in the deepest connection possible with him (John 17:21). One way Christ sustained his intimacy with the Father was to withdraw to a place of solitary to pray (i.e., talk with God), which must have included early morning walks at sunrise and late evening strolls under the stars.

Your spiritual journey of walking with Jesus begins when you come to really know and believe in the depth of Christ’s unconditional love for you, a love so great that the God of the universe not only wants a personal relationship with you, but desires you to share with him in his eternal glory (John 17:22; 2 Thess. 2:14).
